The Spanish consulate in Brussels has developed a new procedure (currently in test phase) to speed up the application for NIE numbers. Indeed, previously, applying for a NIE number through the consulate could easily take several months. This article discusses the different steps to apply for the NIE number yourself through the Spanish consulate in Brussels.
What is an NIE number?
An NIE number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is an identification number for non-residents in Spain. You need this number to communicate with the Spanish government, apply for utility contracts, pay taxes, etc. You can compare the NIE number to your national register number.
1. How do you start the application for the NIE number through the Spanish consulate?
You start the procedure by per capita fill in the online application form. You will find the link to the form here.
The form consists of nine steps. Please have your identity card to hand in advance.
After you fill in the form, you will receive by e-mail (be sure to check your spam) instructions on how to proceed. This e-mail contains:
- the forms filled in for you EX-15 and form Modelo 790, in one attachment (pdf file; the file name is your full name);
- the printing instructions;
- A digital consulate access pass (pdf file).

2. Do I need to make an appointment?
You need no appointment to make. You can drop by without an appointment and enter the consulate using the digital access pass. At the consulate entrance, show this access pass on your phone along with your identity card. You will be asked not to print the access pass.
Consulate opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. (excluding public holidays).
Address:
Spanish Consulate-General in Brussels
Rue Ducale 85 (GPS: Rue Ducale 85)
B-1000 Brussels
3. How do I prepare for an appointment?
First, print one copy of the forms EX-15 and Modelo 790 and sign both documents on the boxes indicated. In addition, make a photocopy of your recto/verso identity card.
If the application concerns a minor, a copy of the identity document of the parent signing is also required.
Preferably use 80 gr/m² paper and print double-sided where possible.
4. How does an appointment go?
With the digital access pass and your identity card, you can enter the consulate. After this, you should wait until it is your turn to be assisted.
Make sure you have your bank card handy as the administrative cost for the application is €9.84 per person (year 2025).
5. What happens after your appointment?
The processing and assignment of the NIE number - after you have been to the consulate - takes on average three weeks. This deadline cannot be accelerated as the allocation is entirely in the hands of the Spanish General Commissariat of Immigration. After allocation, you will receive the NIE certificate by e-mail.
Comments
Please note that this application procedure is only for non-Spanish citizens living in Belgium who need the NIE number for economic activities. Think of buying a property or accepting an inheritance.
You cannot apply for a NIE number for a long-term stay in Spain. If you want to stay in Spain for more than 90 days, you will need to submit a separate application to the Immigration Department in Spain. Read more about emigrating to Spain.
