Do you have plans to buy a Spanish property, accept an inheritance or start your own business in Spain? If so, it is NIE number<\/strong> <\/a>(N\u00famero de Identidad de Extranjero<\/em>) is the very first thing you need to arrange. This number is the Spanish equivalent of the Belgian national registration number or the Dutch citizen service number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has changed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Until recently, you could apply for a NIE number relatively easily through the Spanish Consulate in Brussels. Since <\/strong>30 April 2026<\/strong><\/a> this route is unfortunately closed:<\/strong> the consulate has reported that you can no longer apply for your own NIE number here at the moment. While we do not know how long this halt will last, fortunately there are good alternatives to still get your number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your 3 options for applying for a NIE number<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If applying through the consulate yourself is no longer an option, three routes remain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Travelling to Spain yourself<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You can submit the application locally to the Spanish National Police. Do bear in mind a bureauctratic process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
